Just As I Have Loved You

In John 13, Jesus told his disciples only hours before his death what would show the world that they followed him.

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

John 13:34, 35 ESV

There have been buckets of ink spilt during the run-up to this election, and I am sure there will be buckets more spilt afterward. Many people will write news articles, essays, and op-eds analyzing the results and declaring either how bad things will be now that their opponents have won or how amazing they will be now that their side won.

Although as Christians we might feel that we are more closely aligned with the political values of one party or candidate, we shouldn’t fall into the trap of thinking that this or that person will be our savior. Our Savior and King is the one described in Daniel 7.

“I saw in the night visions,
and behold, with the clouds of heaven
there came one like a son of man,
and he came to the Ancient of Days
and was presented before him.
And to him was given dominion
and glory and a kingdom,
that all peoples, nations, and languages
should serve him;
his dominion is an everlasting dominion,
which shall not pass away,
and his kingdom one
that shall not be destroyed”

Daniel 7:13, 14 ESV

Whether you voted or not, whether you openly or inwardly supported one of candidates, if you say you follow the one like the Son of Man, consider whether through all of this worldly struggle you are showing the love of Jesus to others.

While the rest of the world is consumed by division and self-serving political allegiances, let’s show them that we desire a better country, a heavenly country (Heb 11:16).
